has just gotten worse. today, for example, romney gave a speech trying to sell himself as incredible commander in chief but his list of missteps is unprecedented. his disstrous british trip. he was labeled "mitt the twit," calling the operation that led to gadhafi's death a mission trip and never mind the cold war is over. maybe we wouldn't -- shouldn't be surprised that his foreign policy agenda is a mess. his team includes over a dozen former advisers to president bush. in fact, bush's defense secretary, donald rumsfeld, called romney's speef, terrific, comprehensive speech. our latest poll shows that america's people don't buy romney as commander in chief. he trails the president on that 47 to 39%. and he trails the president by 6% on foreign policy. for decades, republicans have had the edge over democrats when it comes to national security but thanks to this president's strength and romney's weakness, that trend is over. joining me now is richard wolffe, vice president and executive editor of msnbc.com and an msnbc political analyst and brian, a senior fellow at the american for

the speech that romney gave today. i know he did emphasize for a while, libya, of course that has been an ongoing situation for the united states. >> reporter: in fact, it was all benghazi, benghazi, and that is really the reason, the romney campaign attacking the white house on foreign policy, they believe that the white house is lacking in the foreign policies. they worry that the al-qaeda affiliates were active in the campaign militias. daryl issa is holding hearings this wednesday, focusing in part on this e-mail from the embassy in tripoli, last february, asking to leave a special team in libya for another four months. the commander of that team will reportedly testify that ambassador chris stevens, who of course died in the raid, wanted to keep the team even longer but of course was let down. it is not clear how long the security agents stayed. tonight, they say the original team was being fazed out as libya teams took over, and could not have prevented the fatal attack in benghazi. the top terrorism official is on his way to libya to make his own assessment tomorrow. so you can

of our military commanders. >> to me that sounds like mitt romney is suggesting he'll do exactly what the president is doing. do you have a different interpretation? >> i didn't. i tried to look at the speech through the eyes of a combat soldier. the most interesting thing he said, i thought, was ha hope is not a strategy, but rhetoric isn't either. it was a gigantic missed opportunity to outline really finite fundamental and specific strategies for dealing with the problems he so ably described. in afghanistan, for example, there is a real mess there in the sense that negotiations clearly aren't going to happen. we're not training the afghans fast enough to really pick up after 2014 when we are supposed to have withdrawn combat troops. there is no plan for what happens after december 2014 and the whole thing has fallen into a messy, bloody stalemate. i was looking to romney to provide some glimmer of a way out of that. whether it was endorsing fast track negotiations, whatever it was. i was looking for a plan. i didn't find it there or other things he mentioned. the one specific thin

're seeing right now. mitt romney will have a major foreign policy speech later this week. a lot of this will come out in the presidential debates. first one domestic. final preparations are underway. the first one on wednesday. k. tv r. reporter chris jose is live in denver with a preview. good morning to you, chris. >> good morning, guys. when president obama and mitt romney go head to head inside the arena two days from now, it could be the moment that defines this election. this event is so big, it will shut down six miles of i-25 for six hours right in the middle of rush hour, likely causing denver's version of karma gedden. look here. you can see preparations are ongoing inside. basically this arena, which has 7,000 seats, will be transformed into a giant television set with some 200 people in the crowd. that being said, this debate is not open to the public. it's invitation only. only a handful of tickets were given to the university and each campaign. in a few hours, students will have a chance at tickets through lottery. of course, with 11,000 students, chances are slim.
